Helping families with complex problems...

What is Think Family?

Think Family is Avon and Somerset's response to the national Troubled Families initiative. Troubled Families is a multi-agency initiative aimed at pooling the resources of key public bodies to help families with multiple and complex problems. Troubled Families are those that have problems and cause problems to the community around them, putting high costs on the public sector. The government is committed to working with local authorities and their partners to help 400,000 families in England turn their lives around by 2020. We want to ensure the children in these families have the opportunity of a better life whilst also reducing police demand and costs to the taxpayer. In order to be eligible for the programme families need to meet at least 2 of the following 6 criteria:

  1. Parents and children involved in crime or ASB
  2. Children who have not been attending school regularly
  3. Children who need help
  4. Adults at risk of financial exclusion or young people at risk of workless-ness
  5. Families affected by Domestic Abuse
  6. Parents and children with a range of health problem.

As part of the Think Family programme, the Police will work alongside local authorities to:

  • Help families with multiple problems to overcome them
  • Reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Tackle domestic abuse
  • Reduce the high costs these families place on the public sector each year
