Addiction Recovery Agency (ARA) is experienced in providing services to people with drug,alcohol or gambling problems. All our services offer the best opportunity to progress towards abstinence and to maintain recovery from addiction to drugs,alcohol or gambling.

  • The ARA Alcohol Misuse Service provides support and information for anyone aged over 18 who has concerns about their drinking or that of someone else.

    We offer a range of support for clients to make changes to their drinking.

    Changes might include, reducing drinking, becoming abstinent from alcohol, maintaining abstinence or managing relationships with someone in the family who is drinking problematically.

  • ARA currently works with individuals in a number of ways to support making changes to their lives. This includes workshops that cover:

    • the process of change
    • goals
    • triggers
    • high risk situations
    • managing feelings and relationships.

  • We provide a counselling service for individuals dealing with Problem Gambling in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Wales.

  • ARA provides 1:1 counselling for people experiencing problems with their or a family members gambling. ARA’s 1:1 counselling services cover the whole of South West England 

    ARA works in partnership with GamCare, a registered charity and the leading national authority on the provision of advice, practical help, support and counselling in addressing the social impact of gambling. GamCare offers advice and information by phone and online.The GamCare helpline is 0808 802 0133.  Calls to this number are free from all UK landlines and most major mobile phone networks. NetLine is at www.gamcare.org.uk

    First appointments are offered within three weeks. Evening appointments are available twice a week

    They also have specific support for young people.

    We provide outreach one-to-one support for young people in Bristol who are affected by their own or someone else’s gambling. This service aims to provide support for young people at the earliest opportunity in order to prevent more serious problems occurring. We usually see young people for between 1 and 6 face to face sessions, but some people can have more than this.

    Anyone can refer young people to this service. This includes parents and carers, other professionals, or young people themselves.

    Gambling Education Workshops

    We deliver free interactive education workshops for teenagers in colleges and youth projects throughout Bristol covering:

    attitudes to gambling and risk;

    about gambling/understanding chance;

    staying safe in gambling situations;

    recognising problem gambling;

    where to find extra support.

    These workshops can be tailored to focus on particular issues such as online gaming, debt and risky behaviour. Contact us now to book a workshop.

    Training for Youth Professionals

    We offer a free one day course aimed at workers who engage with young people in Bristol to increase their experience and confidence in delivering gambling education.

  • Based at our Bristol and North Somerset offices, Gloucestershire (with our partner agency Gloucestershire Counselling Service)  and South Wales (based at partner agencies  in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil and Neath).
