Barnardos Children Affected By Parental Imprisonment (CAPI)

About Barnardos Children Affected By Parental Imprisonment (CAPI)

The Bristol Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment team supports children and families where a family member is involved in the Criminal Justice System.

Pathways Covered

Children and families

In England and Wales approximately 200,000 children have a parent sent to prison each year. There is no standard collection of information about who these children are and their needs. It has been recognised that having a family member in prison can increase the likelihood of the child/family experiencing poverty, debt, housing and mental health issues. The Bristol Supporting Prisoner's Families Team work directly with these families in order to provide them with support within the local community.

What we do

Aim of the Project

* To reduce the likelihood of intergenerational offending by raising the awareness of the risks posed to this vulnerable and hidden group and by improving services across statutory and third sector agencies.

 Services provided for the family

* Advice on prison visits and applying for the Assisted Prison Visits Scheme.

* Working with parents to tell their children a parent is in prison.

* Engage families with services in their local communities.

* Direct family support work - this could include helping a family change their benefits, make application for accommodation,

* A listening ear for the family who may want to talk confidentially about any concerns they have.

Barnardo’s Defendants’ Family Room at Bristol Crown Court

This is an exciting new pilot that will offer families a safe environment where children
can play and information is available about the various support services they can access. The staff at Bristol Crown Court have worked closely with Barnardo’s CAPI (Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment) to make this service available to defendants’ families.
