Oasis Talk

About Oasis Talk

Oasis-Talk is a community Interest Company that offers one-to-one talking therapies and group wellbeing courses to help you cope, heal and improve your emotional health and well being.
Oasis-Talk believes it is important to find the right type of therapy for you. We therefore offer initial appointments of 1.5 hours to find out about you and your circumstances. This longer session offers some therapy, which may be all that is needed, but if you decide to continue with talking therapy we can recommend the most suitable type of therapy and practitioner to meet your needs.
Whatever kind of support we give you, we do our best to value you for who you are and to help you be all that you can be.

Pathways Covered

Mental and physical health

Oasis-Talk is a social enterprise that provides psychological therapies to people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

We offer counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and a range of group workshops from our base in Downend and from doctors' surgeries and community venues across South Gloucestershire and Bristol.

We work under contract to the NHS as an Any Qualified Provider. Because our services are funded by the NHS, you won't have to pay anything for the help we give you if you come to us via an NHS referral.

What we do

Oasis Talk offers 3 options for people wishing to improve their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Oasis-Talk offers counselling to people in Bristol and South Glos.

Counselling is a one-to-one therapy that offers you a chance to change how you feel and improve your life. It provides a regular time for you to talk about your troubles in a safe and confidential space.

You may come to counselling because of difficult experiences you’ve been going through, such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement or redundancy. Or you may want help dealing with feelings of depression, anxiety or low self-worth that don’t seem to be connected to a particular event.

Counselling can also help you overcome specific problems, such as a phobia, obsessive behaviour, post-traumatic stress or an eating disorder.

Types of Counselling

There are many different kinds of counselling. Some may appeal to you more than others or be particularly suited to the problem you want to work on. However, research shows that the relationship that develops with your counsellor is more important than any methods they might use.

Types of counselling we offer at Oasis-Talk include:

  • Person-centred counselling
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • Counselling for Depression
  • Brief psychodynamic therapy
  • Integrative counselling
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Post-traumatic stress counselling
  • Counselling for carers
  • Counselling for sexual abuse and rape
  • Counselling for abuse and addiction
  • Couples counselling

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Or CBT, is a talking therapy in which you and your therapist work together on how you think about a situation (cognitive) and how you respond to these thoughts (behaviour).

CBT is based on the principle that we learn unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving over a long period. Identifying and working on these thoughts can help you change your thinking, leading to positive feelings and changes in your behaviour.

CBT focuses on the present and future instead of dwelling on whatever past experiences might have caused your problems.

You and your therapist will discuss your difficulties and set goals for you to achieve. Your therapist will help you learn coping skills and techniques for challenging unhelpful thinking. This may involve assignments or experiments for you to try out between sessions. Your therapist will be able to advise you on how to continue using CBT in daily life once your therapy has ended.

There is a great deal of research evidence to show that CBT can help with a wide range of emotional and psychological problems from anxiety and depression to obsessions and phobias.

Our workshops can help you learn practical ways of managing your problems alongside others who are struggling with the same kind of issue.

The workshops are a bit like an evening class. A facilitator will explain ideas and techniques and open up discussions. The workshops are very informal and we aim to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Workshops are not group therapy. While we welcome participation, you don’t have to share deep secrets or even say anything at all if you don’t want to.

The basis for most of our workshops is cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT. We’ll focus on how you think so you can change the way you feel and act. All of this will be explained at the first session.

Workshops consist of between four and eight weekly sessions, each lasting between one and two hours. They are held weekdays or evenings, and occasionally on Saturday mornings, at doctors’ surgeries and community venues across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Workshops we offer at Oasis-Talk include:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety management
  • Assertiveness skills
  • Depression management
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Long-term caring
  • Mindful living
  • Out of the Blue post-natal depression group
  • Relaxation skills
