About Self Injury Support (Formerly Bristol Crisis Service for Women)

Self Injury Support is a national organisation that supports girls and women in emotional distress. We particularly help women who harm themselves, often called self-injury.

Pathways Covered

Women - domestic abuse and sex work Mental and physical health
  • Bristol Crisis Service for Women is a charity. We were set up in 1986, to support women in emotional distress.

We particularly help girls and women (up to 25 years of age) who harm themselves (often called self-injury). This is how some people cope with their feelings and problems.

  • Our Aims

    • To offer support to women in emotional distress, and particularly to those who self-injure.
    • To develop services, and raise awareness of self-injury and mental health issues, through training and providing information.

    What we do

    How we work

Bristol Crisis Service for Women is run by a management group. TESS is staffed by volunteers, who receive full training and support for their work. Volunteers work alongside paid workers in carrying out many aspects of the organisation's work.

    Supporting Workers and Concerned Others

We have carried out a lot of research into the experiences and needs of women who self-injure. As well as helping to shape our own services, this work has also helped people:
    • get a better understanding of self-injury; and
    • find the best ways of working with people who self-injure.

We have also written ‘good practice guidelines’ for working with people who self-injure.

  • Our service is available in Bristol for girls and young women up to the age of 25.

  • For girls and young women up to 25 who self-injure and need someone to talk to you can text or email one of our support workers.

Open: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri  between 7pm - 9pm

Text us on 0780 047 2908 or email TESS

    • If you don’t know how to start talking, just text or email "hello".

    • We reply to all messages. Our aim is to text back within half an hour and to email within 24 hours during our opening times. Sometimes when we are very busy messages do wait for longer and occasionally we have to reply to emails or texts the following day. You will receive an auto message from us letting you know if we are experiencing a high number of texts and emails.
